“What on Earth Evolved?” was an idea that came to me while I was walking our dog Flossie in the Kent countryside.

 

What, I wondered, would the landscape have looked like 450 million years ago, just as the first signs of life emerged from the seas onto land?

Since then, what living things have been the most significant in the history of life on Earth? Which of them has most influenced the planet we live on today?
